Hand carders
These are my hand carders, which I used to prepare some of the fleece I showed you yesterday. This pair is made by Schacht Spindle, and retails for about $75. These are 112 psi, for use with finer wools, angora, alpaca, cashmere and the like.
I have had my eye on a drum carder for a couple years, but I am trying to wait until we get back to Oregon and start our own flock of sheep to buy it. (I may change my tune this summer when the sheep at my mom’s are shorn again…) The model I will probably purchase is made by Richard Duncan of Duncan Fiber Enterprises, in Clackamas, Oregon. It is a 16″ non-motorized drum carder, made of oak. The Duncans don’t have a website that I can find, but you can

Your hand carders are just like mine. I got a drum carder about 8 years back..a Louet roving carder..and love it.
My mom lives in Clackamas county…Small world! We just visited for the first time a couple months ago…Loved it up there! Real Estate prices are holding nice and steady with an average 3% increase up there.
I got a Strauch standard drumcarder for Christmas, and I love it! The volume of roving you can produce versus hand carding is insane! Just keep in mind, if you are able to afford one, the sooner the better. Prices only go up, and oak doesn’t go bad!
