Charm square swap at Mary Jane's Farm
October 17th, 2005
For several weeks, a group of twenty something folks on the Mary Jane’s Farm chat forum have been swapping charm squares of quilt fabrics. I’ve sent out twenty packets already, have a few more to post this week, and have already recieved six packets in return. We each cut about six 6" square pieces of quilting fabric, throw in a few buttons for good measure (because buttons are fun!) and mail them out. There has been some confusion as to who exactly is on the list of swappers, but we have been muddling thru that. So far I have 26 people on my list. I’m going to make a patchwork quilt out of the squares. O will need a few new blankets when she starts sleeping in her toddler bed next year, and I know I like to take my sweet time finishing quilts, so this is a good time for me to start. I’ll probably have enough squares to make a couple of quilts, actually. Before I even joined in the swapping I had something like 100 six-inch squares. Maybe I’ll make a patchwork quilt for our bed, too.
I’m going to hit the lumber store this week for the materials I need to assemble my quilt frame. It will take a little time to get everything cut, but perhaps I can start quilting our green puss in the corner quilt after the holidays.
In your posting on the charm square swap, you mention building your own quilt frame. Do you have a pattern? I’ve looked for patterns or for ready built frames. The large frames or patterns are very expensive. Any assistance you can give will be appreciated.
Judy, my mom bought me this quilt frame kit several years ago. It comes with all the small wood pieces, like the ratcheting gears, and you provide your own legs, rods, and trestle.
Thanks for the pointer. I’ll give it a try.
